Topic Abstract
: Software Quality Engineering (SQE), when planned andintegrated correctly, is an extremely important success factor for all
types of software engineering projects. An SQE must add value to the
project through more than simply performing quality audits. Unfortunately,
many software organizations and software project managers have marginalized
the SQE role to just that.
Domain expertise, thorough process knowledge (including methodologies and
tools) and analytical and people skills are just some of the additional and
very important criteria required for the optimal SQE role. This
presentation addresses successes and mistakes the presenter has personally
experienced on several software development projects (at three different
aerospace companies) as an SQE, how and why they occurred, how problems
were resolved and the most significant lessons learned that should be
communicated.
Presenter
: David Herrera is currently a Senior Software Quality Engineerwho has worked on multiple missile software projects at Raytheon Missile
Systems in Tucson since July 1999. David has worked as an SQA Manager for
SAIC on an IT E-commerce project in San Diego, California and he has also
worked in the Software Supplier Management Department at Northrop Grumman,
B-2 Division. His specific project experience includes assisting
scientists to determine the best trajectories for the Voyager spacecraft at
JPL, performing analysis on data obtained from the Mariner 10 spacecraft on
Comet Kohoutek at JPL, designing flight simulation software at Lockheed in
Ontario, CA, designing real-time software for an air traffic control
project at General Dynamics in Pomona, CA, and working in Saudi Arabia as a
Software Engineer Lead with TELOS Corporation. David has a B.S. degree in
Mathematics from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
